Distinctive Unit Insignia

Distinctive Unit Insignia

Description
A Silver color metal and enamel device 1 3/32 inches (2.78 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned:  Azure, on a saltire Argent, a fillet saltire Gules, overall a plate charged with a linden leaf Vert veined of the second.  Attached below the shield a Silver scroll inscribed EN ROUTE in red letters.

Symbolism
Blue and white are the colors traditionally associated with Infantry, the designation of the unit for which the insignia was originally authorized.  The saltires, suggested by the Alabama state flag, are used to indicate Alabama, the entire state being the home area of the battalion.  The linden leaf alludes to Linden, the units headquarters.  The motto translates to On The Way.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 203d Infantry Battalion on 15 December 1954.  It was redesignated for the 203d Field Artillery Battalion on 4 September 1957.  The insignia was redesignated for the 156th Military Police Battalion on 2 December 1959.  It was rescinded on 28 September 1976.  It was restored and reassigned to the 156th Military Police Battalion on 23 July 1982.  The insignia was redesignated for the 1200th Quartermaster Battalion on 30 November 1990.  It was redesignated for the 200th Engineer Battalion on 8 May 1996.
